I was born in Japan into a half Chinese, half Japanese family. I grew up in Tokyo and moved to Shanghai at 8 years old. Even when I was in Shanghai, I went to Shanghai Japanese School, so I received almost 7 years of Japanese public education. Because of these experiences, Japanese culture is a large part of my identity. My reason for choosing to learn about Japanese history now is that I want to develop a deeper understanding of my own country’s history through a different lens. Having taken HIEA 115 with Professor Matsumura last winter, I found that Japanese history from a non Japanese perspective is really different from what is taught in Japanese public school. Through this course, I wish to further expand my understanding of Japanese people’s experiences during the early modern period.
